A master key system could work like the following: Each tenant would have a key that opens his apartment only. This is called a change key. Now there is a maintenance man assigned to work on all the apartments in that building but nothing else. He needs access to all the apartments in that building. He would have a sub-master key that could open all those doors in that building only. Other maintenance men assigned to other buildings would have their own sub- master key that would do the same for them working the locks only in the building that is their responsibility. Now you are the owner and want to carry only one key that can open all the locks in every building this is the Master key.
